Getting signatures for

raising the

minimum wage

For my second young achievers challenge I am trying to help my Dad, who is the President of a union called Unite. They are trying to get signatures to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Now people on the minimum wage only get $12.50 an hour and Unite thinks people can't live on that much. This is my sister Iris and my Dad Gerard. They set up a stall in the town square.

To get more signatures we needed to have another stall at the Albert Street market. To set up the stall we had to get up super early and leave home at 5.30 in the morning! I was tired and cold and I didn't like getting up that early. We set up our stall with all the Unite signs and we were wearing Unite t-shirts and hats and we had the petition for people to sign.

We got over one hundred signatures, but there is still quite a lot to go. If they get over 300,000 signatures the goverment will get the people of New Zealand to vote in a referendum whether they should raise it or not. At the end of the day it was really fun getting signatures with Dad and Iris and it was good that people took interest in what my Dad was doing.
